I created a bit of a kerfuffle on twitter this past weekend with this post, which was quasi-tongue-in-cheek commentary on the standard practices and worldview within the strength and conditioning industry.
I agree, the steroids thing is really a strong argument for which I've never heard a convincing rebuttal. Especially when you are old enough to remember McGwire and Sosa being highlighted in the muscle mags at the time, talking about their workouts which were basically just bro-bodybuilding stuff, which even the sport-specific guys would say is highly sub-optimal. And yet, just getting jacked and strong IN GENERAL still produced those results. So if we can get jacked and strong even better, all the more so.
Steroids really should be enough to cinch this argument. But if covid has taught me anything, it's that people love to fight against the obvious.
